His 1910 memoir was entitled, "My Friend the Indian".In his twenties, McLaughlin studied to become a US Indian agent, and was selected to supervise Devils Lake Agency in 1876, transferring to Standing Rock Sioux Agency in the Dakotas. In 1895 he was promoted to Inspector of the Bureau of Indian Affairs and Department of Interior.In introducing his book, McLaughlin writes: "For thirty-eight years I have lived among, or had official dealings with, a race of people little understood by the whites who have displaced them in carrying out the immutable law of the survival of the fittest. It is not the least of my possessions that I hold the confidence of these people. I may say now that in the following pages I have said nothing that will jeopardize the relation that is as a bond between the red men of the West and me."
